Thesis Research – Seeing Sound: Synthesizing Aural and Visual Structures in Contemporary Sculpture
This project draws from scholarship surrounding the relatively new genre of sound art, further focusing on sound sculpture. I explored the juxtaposition of kinetic sculptures and musical instruments, identified the interdependent qualities of sound sculptures, and argued for a shift in mediums for post-contemporary art. Through my research, I analyzed traditional audience/spectator interaction and asserted that contemporary art is turning towards an unprecedented, interactive relationship. Project culminated in a 50-page thesis, supporting my argument with roughly 30 figures.
Independent Study Project – Exploration of Post-1950s Dance
During this project, I identified seminal contemporary dance performances and choreographers. My research culminated in final papers that focused on issues of gender performance in Modern dance and Argentinean Tango as well as the collaboration between John Cage and Merce Cunningham, specifically discussing their historical piece, Points in Space.
Independent Study Project – Survey of Art History
For this project, I began with ‘the beginning of art’ and outlined important shifts in style and perspective, continuing through the history of art, where I spent equal time on western as well as eastern ideals. The purpose of this research was to draw solid connections between predecessors’ change and develop skills to anticipate future movements. From this project, I collected 80+pages of notes that acted as a map for the progression of art history.
